Nigel Mansell gives Ayrton Senna in our picture special dedicated to the grand prix years at Silverstone While Silverstone hasn't been on the calendar every year, the British Grand Prix has.Along with the Italian Grand Prix, it's the only race to have featured on a consistent basis since the inaugural championship season of 1950.As it happens, Silverstone hosted the first ever F1 championship race and has held the British Grand Prix every since 1987 previously alternating with Brands Hatch and even Aintree before that. Only Monza and Monaco have held more than their 48 events.Since that first race it's seen quite a few changes. Only the Hangar Straight and, to an extent, the old finish line before Copse corner remain untouched in 65 years on a circuit which has seen its fair share of action, as Sportsmail found out after looking through the picture archives.Silverstone has undergone some drastic changes since hosting its first F1 championship race in 1950. There used to be just eight corners, but today it now has 18 following the most recent revamp in 2011 which saw the introduction of a new in field complex where the start/finish line now stands in front of the 'Silverstone Wing' paddock area. The above area shows the vast section of the new circuitBut back in the 1950s all this used to be fields. Well it mostly still is, but you know it's an old F1 picture when you see front engined cars, as well as straw bales acting as barriers. Here's Alfa Romeo's Nino Farina leading his team mate Luigi Fagioli during the inaugural Formula One championship race in 1950As well as being the British Grand Prix, the Silverstone race in 1950 was also designated as a European Grand Prix as fans climbed on the pit garages to get a decent vantage point of Nino Farina being crowned the first championship grand prix winner. World championship Formula One racing was officially bornJose Gonzalez leads the way in 1954 in a field featuring two cars that really don't look like they belong. The No 1 and 2 machines are in fact Juan Manuel Fangio (left) and Karl Kling of Mercedes, with the unorthodox chassis quick enough to propel the Argentine to the Formula One world title a year later. On this day though, Gonzalez would go on to claim victory for FerrariAs spectators look on, one track marshall attempts to put out a rather fiery blaze from Tony Brooks' BRM after the Brit spun out and flipped his vehicle in 1956. Thankfully Brooks avoided serious injury despite being thrown clear of the carThey don't make them like this any more. Peter Collins celebrates winning his home Grand Prix for Ferrari in 1958 by sinking a pint of lager. The win was the Italian outfit's sixth in a row at the circuit but they wouldn't triumph again at Silverstone until 1990 with Alain Prost. Collins' victory was sadly his last in Formula One as he was tragically killed in the next race at the Nurburgring for the German Grand PrixShould we bring front rows consisting of four cars back? A quite impressive quadrant of Jim Clark (left to right) Graham Hill (BRM), Richie Ginther (Honda) and Jackie Stewart (BRM) burn rear tyre rubber as they lead away at Silverstone in 1965. In his Lotus, Clark would impressively triumph in the British Grand Prix for a fourth straight year. The Scot would win five in total, a feat matched only by Alain ProstStart 'em young. Graham Hill lets his son Damon take the wheel of the Lotus in 1967 ahead of a Silverstone meeting two months before the Grand Prix. Hill junior didn't quite get the hang of it in time to make his debut that year but just under three decades later he would follow in his father's footsteps to become world champion. Damon and Graham Hill are F1's only father and son championsBetween 1960 and 1973, Silverstone winners consisted entirely of British drivers or more precisely Scots. Jim Clark's three victories were followed by a Jackie Stewart double who in his Matra sees off the Lotus of Jochen Rindt in 1969. One of my favourite aspects of this picture though is the crowd in the background no stands and just a few rows deep. Not a chance of that at the circuit today. It's carnage on lap one of the 1973 British Grand Prix as a multi car pile up caused by Jody Scheckter's McLaren somehow avoided catastrophe with only Andrea de Adamich injured. Above is Roger Williamson's March and although the Brit escaped unharmed on this occasion he would sadly be killed in the next race at Zolder for the Dutch Grand PrixAnd more carnage. Two years later and in the wet there is another multi car pile up involving Jody Scheckter (3), this time collecting Wilson Fittipaldi (front), James Hunt (middle), Carlos Pace (left) and Dave Morgan. The cars are all caught up in catch fencing which seems a rather poor substitute for a gravel trap or a run off areaOne of the very few areas of Silverstone that has remain untouched from 1950 until the present day. It's the Hangar Straight, and while it now has neater track edges and a bridge, it's still a good overtaking spot as James Hunt's McLaren leads the way ahead of John Watson's Brabham in 1977It's quiz time again, so who is this driver making his grand prix debut for McLaren in 1977? If you need a clue, it's arguably one of Formula One's best ever drivers never to win the world title. Answers are at the bottom of the pageHere is a world champion though. It's James Hunt celebrating his first win of the season at Silverstone as he salutes the applauding home crowd following his 18 second win over Niki Lauda's Ferrari in 1977There was more British success for the locals and McLaren in 1981, with John Watson taking his only victory of the season at Silverstone. Despite the Marlboro logos everywhere this wasn't even the peak of tobacco sponsorship in Formula OneSilverstone started to exclusively host the British GP in 1987 and it gave birth to Mansell Mania. Home hero Nigel Mansell (5) managed to overhaul a 30 second lead held by Williams team mate Nelson Piquet (6) before taking victory after a stunning pass on the Hangar StraightHands in pockets, face like thunder and cap still on, runner up Nelson Piquet's reaction says it all as Nigel Mansell celebrates victory in 1987 on the podium alongside Lotus star Ayrton Senna, who cuts a rather amusing glance across to his Brazilian compatriotSilverstone is often threatened by rain on a grand prix weekend and the spectators dressed in macs and warm weather clothing in 1988 look very much prepared for it on the outside of Copse corner as they watch the action at the first corner go pastAyrton Senna would only ever win the British Grand Prix once and it came during the year of his first championship in 1988 with McLaren as the Brazilian punches the air in delight having beaten Nigel Mansell's Williams by over 23 secondsBut what a difference a year makes. In 1989, Ayrton Senna spun in the gravel trap beaching his McLaren and putting him out of the race. The world champion looks on in deep thought as a marshall attempts to clear his stricken car away from the track sideSenna's fortunes fared little better in 1991. This time the McLaren star ran out of fuel with a lap to go. But having still been classified fourth he was given a lift back to the pits by race winner Nigel Mansell in what is one of the iconic images in Formula One history. Today, such actions by the drivers are rewarded with a disciplinary procedure by the FIA. Where's the fun gone, eh?Right place, wrong time. Driving a Brabham used to be a good career option in Formula One, but by 1992 the cars were woeful, a tacky shade of pink and rooted to the back of the grid (if they qualified). At Silverstone Damon Hill somehow pipped the Minardi of Alessandro Zanardi to 26th on the grid, before making his first Formula One start and coming home in a respectable 16th place
