I used to spend $150 a week on cigarettes," he said.Now he's an "e cig" convert one of a rapidly growing number on Staten Island who has turned to what's being marketed as "a healthier alternative" to conventional cigarettes.With the health controversy growing by the day, the e cigarette business is suddenly booming on Staten Island.In fact, vapor lounges are popping up in vacant storefronts across the borough as the number of varieties, flavors and brands skyrocket.The movement is raising very vocal concerns among health care professionals about the industry's impact on recruiting a new generation of young smokers.For a borough that already has the highest number of smokers in New York City an estimated 58,000, which amounts to 16.5 percent of the borough's population Staten Island is now home to armies of e cig users."E cigarettes simulate smoking, undermine smoke free laws and are increasingly popular with young people. Yet without any federal regulation, the public has no guarantees on how they're made, what toxins they may contain or how many they emit. This is a terrifying combination.," said Michael Davoli of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network."Furthermore, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) evidence suggests that e cigarettes may serve as a gateway to cigarette use for young people. . Kiklas, co founder of Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association.He noted that the e cig business grossed $1.6 billion dollars in sales and attracted 5 million users in 2013. By the end of this year, it's estimated that there will be 10 million users in a $3 billion dollar industry, said Kiklas.
