Cigarette blamed for apartment fire MURFREESBORO A discarded cigarette is to blame for a trash can fire at a Murfreesboro apartment complex, an official with the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department said in a press release. Firefighters from two Murfreesboro fire stations responded to an emergency call just before 1:00 Thursday morning Cross Court Apartments, located at 550 Crossway Drive, MFRD spokeswoman Ashley McDonald said. Upon arrival, crews discovered light smoke coming from the complex's laundry room area, which is located in the rear corner of an occupied apartment building. "Crews entered the laundry room and located the fire in a trash can. They quickly extinguished the fire and checked for any other hotspots," McDonald said. MFRD Captain Jamie Bigelow said the fire appears to have started as the result of a discarded cigarette. The estimated damage to the laundry room was about $1,000.
